Sometimes football matches don’t explode with goals but still manage to keep you interested the whole time. That was pretty much the case when Villarreal CF met Elche CF in this La Liga encounter.
Villarreal actually looked sharper right from the opening minutes. They moved the ball quickly and tried to stretch the defence through the wings. After a few early attacks, the pressure finally paid off when a neat move inside the box led to the opening goal.
For a while it felt like Villarreal might take full control.
But Elche had other ideas. Instead of sitting deep, they slowly started pushing forward more often. Their equaliser arrived after a tidy attacking move that caught Villarreal slightly off guard, and suddenly the match felt wide open again.
Both sides had moments after that. Villarreal tried to build patiently, while Elche looked dangerous whenever they broke forward.
Then came the moment that changed the night.
Late in the second half Villarreal found space near the edge of the area, and the finish was calm enough to beat the keeper. Elche pushed forward during the final minutes, but Villarreal managed to hold on and secure a narrow 2–1 win.
