India Vs New Zealand – 1st T20I Match Highlights – 22 OCT 2026
India pulled off a remarkable chase against New Zealand in Christchurch, winning the opening T20I by four wickets with two balls remaining. Chasing 226 was never going to be easy, but Sanju Samson and Naman Dhir produced the kind of innings that turned a tense contest into a memorable victory.
New Zealand finished on 225/4 after being asked to bat first. Finn Allen gave the hosts an aggressive start with 45 off 24 balls, while Glenn Phillips took charge in the middle and later overs. Phillips remained unbeaten on 82 from just 40 deliveries, and Bevon Jacobs added a quick 31. India struggled to contain the scoring, particularly towards the end.
The reply began in explosive fashion. Samson smashed 67 from 33 balls, sharing a 93-run opening stand with Abhishek Sharma, who made 29 off 12. However, New Zealand fought back through their spinners, and India suddenly lost several wickets. Shreyas Iyer’s 42 off 28 balls helped settle things, but the finish still needed a special effort.
Naman Dhir delivered exactly that, blasting an unbeaten 42 from only 15 balls. His late hitting carried India to 230/6 in 19.4 overs, completing their highest successful T20I run chase.
Samson earned Player of the Match honours, and India took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
