Day one of the 2nd Test in Colombo had plenty of tense moments right from the very first session on August 23, 2026.
Winning the toss gave the batting side an early edge on a pitch that looked ready to turn, but the opening overs were anything but smooth sailing. Sri Lanka’s spinners got involved early, gripping the ball and keeping the batters guessing with sharp drift and bounce. India had to put their heads down and grind out every single run, with the top order surviving a few close leg-before appeals before lunch.
As the sun baked the surface in the afternoon, shot-making got slightly easier. A solid 70-run partnership gave India some breathing room, but just when they looked set to dominate, Sri Lanka broke through with two quick wickets in the space of three overs.
By the time stumps were called, neither team had completely pulled away. It was classic subcontinent red-ball cricket tough, slow-burning, and leaving the match totally balanced heading into day two.
