man mexico just showed everyone why they are a massive threat in group a of this fifa world cup. they completely dominated south africa with a solid 2-0 win in the opening match and honestly the game was pure unadulterated chaos from start to finish.
right from the opening whistle mexico started pressing like crazy and south africas defense looked totally nervous under pressure. the first goal came around the 9th minute when quinones reacted super quick to a loose ball inside the box and slotted it right through the keepers legs. the stadium went completely mental. south africa tried to use their pace on the counter but everything unravelled for them in the second half. sithole got a straight red card for a bad tackle in the 49th minute leaving them with 10 men.
mexico capitalized heavily and jimenez scored a beautiful header in the 67th minute from an alvarado cross to make it 2-0. after that it was just a red card fest. zwane got sent off for violent conduct leaving south africa with 9 men and then mexico’s montes also got a red card in injury time. three red cards in a tournament opener is just insane!
