Racing Santander made an emotional return to La Liga at El Sardinero, and what a game it turned out to be. The home side drew 2-2 with Villarreal on August 16 after a wild first half that saw all four goals scored.
Villarreal started brightly and looked dangerous early on, but Racing soon grew into the match. Andrés Martín opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 21st minute after a VAR review. The home crowd barely had time to settle before Sergio Martínez doubled the lead in the 34th minute with a superb volley from outside the box. It was a special moment for the young Racing player on his top-flight debut.
Villarreal, though, refused to panic. Pape Gueye pulled one back in the 45th minute with a well-placed effort, and Nicolas Pépé made it 2-2 just a minute later. Suddenly, a match that looked comfortable for Racing was completely level again.
The second half was more cautious, but neither team stopped looking for the winner. Both goalkeepers made important saves, and Racing came close late on.
